ESUP, ESAU and ReproUnion Scholarship 2022 Fellow investigates TyG link with hypogonadism and male infertility

Every Friday, I visited the sperm laboratory in the same clinic and familiarised myself with the steps of sperm analysis. Prof. Giwercman created a wonderful research environment there and time flew. He was always supportive and gave me excellent scientific guidance along with Prof. Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman. Moreover, everyone on the research team was friendly and welcoming, and I was fortunate to form lasting friendships with them. “The highlight of my experience was presenting my work at the European Academy of Andrology Congress and networking with other researchers in the field.” Research topic My research topic focused on the triglyceride/ glucose index (TyG), a novel marker of insulin resistance and beta-cell function. I explored the association of TyG with hypogonadism and male infertility. I am grateful to Prof. Andrea Salonia (IT) for introducing me to this research concept. I analysed three cohorts and received valuable

My passion for andrology led me to pursue a specialisation in this field during the final year of my urology training. I wanted to excel as an academician and learn from the best experts in the field. Thanks to the European Urological Scholarship Programme (EUSP), in collaboration with the EAU Section of Andrological Urology (ESAU) and ReproUnion, I had the opportunity to join their programme and the Reproductive Medicine team at Lund University in Sweden as a visiting research fellow for one year. Under the guidance of Prof. Aleksander Giwercman (SE), I gained invaluable knowledge and experience during Project 1 “COVID-19 and male reproductive functions”. The year 2022 will always remain in my memory as one of the most remarkable years of my life. Research environment I conducted my research activities at the Reproductive Medicine Center of Skåne University Hospital and the Clinical Research Center of Lund University. Every Wednesday, I joined Prof. Giwercman at the outpatient clinic and learned from his approach to andrological patients.

guidance and feedback from Prof. A. Giwercman throughout the process. My writing and reading skills improved significantly and I became more confident in statistics. The highlight of my experience was presenting my work at the European Academy of Andrology Congress and networking with other researchers in the field. I highly recommend every young academic urologist to apply for the EUSP Fellowship grant at some stage in their career. About the programme The programme research project “Impact of the human virome on male reproductive health – lessons learned from COVID-19 pandemia”, embarked on the investigation of the effects of COVID-19 in urological patients. The project is focused on research with clinical/surgical training in andrology. Participants have access to exclusive, cutting-edge research tools available to ReproUnion such as registries, large-patient cohorts and biobanks in the Nordic countries. ReproUnion is comprised of a network of 13 clinical and research units in Denmark and Sweden centred on infertility prevention, treatment and management.
